With its months of unbroken blue skies and sunshine, it's relaxed life-style
and its wonderful wines, Cyprus has been a favourite holiday destination for
many years. Lazing on the beach during the day, eating out in friendly tavernas
and dancing the night away in one of the sophisticated clubs, it is a wonderful
way to spend the perfect holiday.
But there is another side of Cyprus, the old, traditional Cyprus, peaceful,
quiet and timeless, that still exists away from the coastal resorts.

At the
western end of the island, between the north and south coasts are the mountains
of the Troodos range, snow-capped in winter, cool and pine-scented in the
summer. On one of the many foothills stands the village of Ayios
Dimitrianos. Every
journey through the hills brings stunning views and in parts of the
forests there are still moufflon, the
wild sheep of Cyprus, occasionally seen in the wild. With it's monasteries,
waterfalls, streams, wild life and sleepy villages, the Troodos is a wonderfully
peaceful and relaxing area to spend a holiday.

Nothing much has changed here. The small population still tend their grape
fields, grow their fruit and vegetables in the traditional way, work with
donkeys and stay close to their families and church. Quiet during the day, at
night the silence is unbroken and deep. Time
and the world have stood still! |
